Them What Ain't Got Hardly No Nothin' (1975)

From the musical "Bulbous!"

I could go to the college,
Live inside a dorm and get some book-learnin';
But between admissions and tuitions
Would I find a person who was better than the vermin?
I could go to the ghetto,
Have a bagel and some other things for eatin';
But from chicken soups and pickle groups
Would I find a person who was better than a cretin?
It's clear that their possessions
Are all that holds them back;
Although they have a lot of things,
It's what they need they lack.
There's two sides to the coin;
That's why I ought to join
With them what ain't got hardly no nothin'.

I could go to a concert,
Hear the works of Rimsky-Korsakov and Handel;
But among the rests and tonal crests
Would I find a person who could really hold a candle?
I could go to the army,
See them follow all their orders to the letter;
But with target drills and stifled wills
Would I find a person who was really any better?
When everything is set up
And you just perform the script,
You can bet that your expression
Is all that will get clipped.
You only need a start;
That's why I should be partners
With them what ain't got hardly no nothin'.

There used to be a time of just being myself,
The simple and carefree days;
I knew who I was and was happy inside,
I didn't need anyone's praise.
But then when I grew up it wasn't enough
To be satisfied in my own head;
I suddenly wanted to push myself forth,
Be the leader instead of the led.
Now I see my mistake,
But it's too late to escape;
How I wish I could get back with the breed
Where nothin' is all that you need.

I could go to the office,
Take a memo for Amalgamated Plastic;
But through merger acts and market facts
Would I find a person who was not a mental spastic?
I could go to the Senate,
Pass the laws and be ruler of my state;
But by cutting throats and winning votes
Would I be a person who was really all that great?
There's no need to be a power
If you're set on being you;
What matters in the end
Is what you are, not what you do.
I gotta shuck this jive
And once more be alive
With them what ain't got hardly no nothin' …
With those who don't have anything!
